Studying in Malaysia

Malaysia is a diverse tropical country, split into two parts, namely Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo (East Malaysia) by the South China Sea. Its blend of Malay, Chinese and Indian ethnic groups exhibits a kaleidoscope of colours and cuisines, making for a distinctly varied culture.

Kuala Lumpur, the most populous city in Malaysia, is located on Peninsular Malaysia about a five-hour bus ride north of Singapore. This spread-out city constantly on the rise is ornamented with many mosques and colonial British- and Moor-influenced buildings that remind city-goers of its colourful past.

Now, before you come to Malaysia to pursue studies, you need to have and know about a few important things mentioned below ahead of your travel.

Tuition Fees

The International Student Office (ISO) will advise you on payment of tuition and other fees before you arrive in Malaysia. You are required to settle all payments as per the student bill which accompanies your letter of offer.

Important Travel Documents

Passport

Your passport must be kept valid for your stay and for travel purposes. Maintaining a valid passport is your responsibility. Your country's embassy or consulate office can assist with passport renewals. The ISO can provide a letter certifying enrolment status to renew your passport.

Student Pass and Visa Approval Letter

The student pass and visa are endorsed onto the passport by the Malaysian Immigration Department. The endorsement indicates visa type, the length of stay in Malaysia, the number of entries permitted into Malaysia and the validity of the student pass (which is normally for one year). The Malaysian Immigration regulations require all international students to enrol as full-time students throughout their stay in Malaysia.

Original Copy of School Certificates

Bring along the original school certificates for confirmation of authenticity of the documents submitted in the application.

Medical Health Report and Form

The Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education requires all international students to undergo a set of medical health examinations in their home country before reporting to MIU.

Students coming from yellow fever endemic zones such as Africa and South America in particular, are reminded to ensure vaccination before entering Malaysia. A yellow fever vaccination certificate, valid only if the vaccines are approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and administered at an approved yellow fever vaccinating centre is required from those who come from these zones. The Malaysian Ministry of Health will quarantine students from these zones without a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival for 2 weeks. The certificate is valid for 10 years and effective after 10 days from the date of vaccination.

The medical health report form is sent together with the letter of offer for admission, and must be submitted to the ISO or to MIU.

MIU reserves the right to request (at the applicant's expense) either a repeat of full medical examination or any specific tests in Malaysia, should there be any doubt about the medical report submitted. MIU reserves the right to reject an application on the basis of the results of the health examination, should there be evidence that false health information has been given by the applicant in either the examination report or any supporting documents.

Financial Support Documents

Evidence of financial support is needed to show that there is enough money to allow completion of the programs at MIU (For example: letter of scholarship award, financial sponsorship letter and international bank draft or bank statements). Having these documents will greatly ease the way through customs and immigration clearance.

Personal Accident Insurance Coverage

You are covered under limited personal accident insurance while you are registered as a full-time student at MIU.

On Arrival in Malaysia

All international students arriving at Kuala Lumpur will be provided with airport pick-up service upon their arrival in Malaysia. In order to secure airport pick-up from your international arrival, you must email or fax the completely filled Airport Pick-Up Form to the ISO by providing the confirmed flight details at least seven days prior to your arrival. This form is mailed or couriered to you together with the letter of offer of admission. The e-mail address is: iso@miu.edu.my; the fax number is: +603-78032921.

Students are advised to arrive at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA1/2) during MIU's office hours (9am to 6pm), Monday to Friday. This is to facilitate airport pick-up by MIU personnel and ease of accommodation check-in. It would help if you do not travel on Malaysia's public holidays.

MIU personnel will meet you at KLIA1/2 to receive you and take you to the accommodation. Students are not allowed to exit KLIA1/2 without being accompanied by MIU personnel.

If you have accompanying family members, relatives or friends travelling with you, MIU will assist the accompanying members reserve travel by the KLIA1/2 limo or budget taxi if there are no vacant seats in the vehicle.

For other points of entry, there will be no pick-up service, and you must immediately report to MIU upon your arrival in Malaysia.
