“The quality of life is defined by its activities”, a famous saying by Aristotle defines the importance of extra-curricular activities in all phases of life. I am Nisha Fareena a Chemical Engineering graduate by MIU, and I will love to share my experience on campus not only in terms of my academic achievements by the importance of extra-curricular during my term of study. When we hear the term engineering it automatically clicks long hours of studies, limited friends, limited social interactions and a so called boring lifestyle. However, we tend to forget that spicing up high intellectual degrees with extra-curricular activities is the hidden gem behind success. These extra-curricular activities comes in many forms and shapes depending on one’s interest level to increase sharpness of the mind, improve social contact, teaches the value of failure and success, builds knowledge outside the book and most importantly creates those precious circle of people that you get inspiration from in different phases of life. If there is one thing a student needs to understand for success is physical fitness and mental sharpness that comes with discipline through various activities, sports or even a daily run at the gym, that not only gives u the shape but builds that self-esteem that makes them stand out in society. During my four years degree I have been a part of many clubs, activities and competitions that has inspired me, motivated me and kept me sharp mentally and fit physically. I have been a VP of the MIU Times that gave me the opportunity to network inside campus, kept updated with the daily activities going-on in campus and arranged English literacy activities to help students improve their command on the language and to understand insights of students on many different topics through debating and public speaking. In addition, I have been the director or media for the rotaract club in MIU where we documented many activities that took place under our club leadership, this gave me the opportunity to network with people even outside of MIU that were part of the rotary community with many elderly and successful people, be inspired by their achievements and learn from them on a broader means.
In addition, I have been part of the MIU debate team on a national level which helped me tremendously in improving my confidence level, social skills, argument presentation skills, command on speech and most importantly understanding different perspectives of human interaction. During my course of debating we have been on a national scale twice once in
USIM debating ten national universities and next on the Malaysian Career Fair debating eight national universities standing the runner up and the champion prize respectively.
I have also been an active member of green peace Malaysia since my major has let me to develop a tremendous amount of interest in environmental protection and clean fuel technology for the betterment of tomorrow’s future. Lastly, I have also been a part of the Chem-e-car competition to build a hydrogen-based vehicle that is the future of Green transportation whereby I was selected by the university to represent as the chair person for UNSDC (United Nation Sustainable Development Counsel) to provide green solutions within the premises of MIU campus.
Finally, I participated as a active student body to arrange many in campus occasional events, open mics and took part in gym trainings as well as active sports. As a result, I will ensure that all these extra-curricular activities gave me the ability to perform the top of my class and gave me the ability of lead project works, academic discussions and presentations. Therefore, I will like to set an example to my juniors to be active in any and many activities setting up time for each one of them to shape their confidence, improve communication, learn discipline, improve mental sharpness and remain physically fit for a better and successful future that awaits each and every one of us. The choice is ours!
